The National Living Wage (NLW) (for 21+) will increase to £12.71 per hour from April 1, 2026, a 4.1% rise (50p) following the April 2025 rate of £12.21. This forms part of a government move to reduce youth rates and ensure the wage is at least 66% of median earnings.
Key Changes from 1 April 2026:
- National Living Wage (21+): £12.71 per hour
- 18-20 Year Olds: £10.85 per hour
- 16-17 Year Olds: £8.00 per hour
- Apprentice Rate: £8.00 per hour
Key Details:
- Increase Amount: The main NLW rate is rising by 50p (4.1%) from the £12.21 rate set in April 2025.
- Youth Rates: The government is phasing out lower youth rates, with 18-20 year olds seeing a significant 8.5% increase to £10.85.
- Context: The Low Pay Commission (LPC) recommendations consider cost of living and inflation, aiming for a consistent increase in wages.
- Voluntary Rate: Note that a separate, voluntary “Real Living Wage” is higher, with 2026 rates expected to be £13.45 across the UK and £14.80 in London.
